Role Number: 200470909
As part of the Electrochemical modeling team under the Cell Engineering group, you will help with the design, development and qualification of advanced lithium-ion battery technology for portable power consumer applications! We partner with internal multi-functional teams to develop physics-based electrochemical models of target designs based on calibrations and design assumptions as well as for early design predictions. In addition, you will develop capability to simulate cell aging versus load and operating conditions and perform ongoing research work to study new aging mechanisms and work with internal and external resources to validate the models to high levels of confidence. Guidance will be provided to internal cell engineering staff and external vendor base to optimize cell design, cell performance and, where applicable, cell production issues.

Key Qualifications

  • B.S. and 3+ years of relevant industry experience in battery design, electrochemical modeling experience on lithium-ion or lithium polymer battery using software such as COMSOL Multiphysics and/or other battery simulators/solvers.
  • Excellent knowledge of capacity fade and cell impedance growth mechanisms.
  • Working knowledge of Matlab, VBA, Python, etc, to extract information from large data.
  • Familiarity with applicable test equipment, test procedures, international standards and certified agency requirements applicable to rechargeable lithium battery products.
  • Familiarity with current production processes applicable to lithium rechargeable cells.
  • Strong proficiency in electrochemical engineering and mathematical modeling.

Description

Mathematical modeling of the electrochemical behavior of lithium-ion cell designs using COMSOL Multiphysics and other battery specific simulators and solvers. Research and development of new modeling methods and tools to study complex physics of Li-ion cells, such as aging and thermal effects. Work with cell and battery engineering groups to verify accuracy of mathematical models and performance details to meet application requirements. Conduct investigations, prepare status reports related to cell design and performance issues, resolve issues as required. Simulation of new cell designs. Development of performance specifications and assisting with establishing cell design. Pursue development of intellectual property to protect technology developments and secure competitive edge. Act as technical contact point for electrochemical characterization and mathematical modeling software, techniques and application. Work with the cell vendors as needed to support the development efforts.

Education & Experience

B.S. + 3 years of relevant experience. PhD in Material Science, Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related, strongly preferred.

Additional Requirements

  • Travel:
  • [5%-10%] Travel to external vendors, suppliers and manufacturing facilities is expected.

Pay & Benefits

  • At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role.
