POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. As a Countryside YMCA Member Coach you will be responsible for providing coaching and connection for members in an effort to increase member satisfaction and member retention.

EDUCATION AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Must be 21 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent. Must hold or complete Listen First training, CPR/AED and First Aid certifications upon being hired. Should have knowledge of Wellness and Fitness education principles, along with prior knowledge of strength and cardiovascular training.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Supports and coaches lifestyle change by using Coaching Techniques/LISTEN FIRST.
  • Builds member connections to staff, members, programs of interest, and the YMCA mission.
  • Develops short term sustainable goals; fitness education when applicable; and follow-up.
  • Assesses, re-assesses and supports changing member needs.
  • Monitors participants for exercise adherence and facility utilization.
  • Offers recommendations on exercises and is able to work with all levels of fitness and age ranges.
  • Uses all resources available including other staff.
  • Provides basic information about nutrition, cardiovascular fitness, strength training, mind & body, professional support, group and water exercise, new/non-exerciser programs.
  • Trains and coaches within defined scope of training and refers members to other specialized support when appropriate.
  • Works to increase membership retention and participation
  • Develops and executes new ideas, such as accountability programs, to keep members engaged with the Y and connected to fellow members.
  • Creates and helps instruct beginner classes “ex. Begin to spin, begin to x,y,z”
  • Reaches out to “critical” low usage members who may be on the verge of canceling their membership to engage with them and offer them complementary coaching sessions to get them back on track
  • Provides tours to potential new members with the goal of new membership.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Ability to work with varying wellness levels and ages.
  • Prior experience with a variety of strength equipment, free weights and cardio equipment.
  • Knowledge of current fitness issues/trends/offerings.
  • Ability to respond calmly and quickly to safety and emergency situations.
  • Ability to build genuine relationships with participants and coworkers, and maintain a welcoming environment with people from all walks of life.
  • Ability to analyze problems and solve them using good judgment and resourcefulness.
  • Effective conflict resolution skills.
  • Must be able to engage strangers in conversations and make all people feel welcome.
  • Ability to attend all training and meetings as required even if scheduled outside normal working or regular scheduled hours.
  • Reliable and punctual attendance; position may include evenings and weekends
  • Must pass a criminal background check
RATE OF PAY: $13 per hour. All part-time staff working a minimum of 16 hours per quarter will receive a complimentary individual membership to the Countryside YMCA!
AVAILABILITY: Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: May involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Must speak clearly so listeners can understand and understand the speech of another person. May be required to see details of objects that are less than a few feet away.
